The Sassiest Authors Ever

Attention readers! Today, we bring to you the sassiest authors ever! Who doesn’t love an author who has the courage to ‘stick it to the man’ and pens down their frustrations with a good dose of cruel irony? Here are three sassy authors we adore and some of their books we recommend!  Books by these authors will definitely brighten your day.

Charlie Brooker

“One of life’s sorest tragedies is that the people who brim with confidence are always the wrong people.”

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which is a pity because this week the National Association of Beholders wrote to tell me that I’ve got a face like a rucksack full of dented bells.”

Let’s kick off with these ‘encouraging’ words by Charlie Brooker! He is the creator of the anthology series Black Mirror and also wrote many successful books with delightful titles such as I Can Make You Hate, The Hell of it All and Dawn of the Dumb.

At our libraries, you can borrow The Hell of it All, which is a hilarious collection of misanthropic scribblings about everything from the misery of nightclubs to the death of Michael Jackson. The collapse of civilisation has never felt this funny. Enjoy! 😉

Yan Lianke

“He did know, and better than most, the People’s Liberation Army’s three rules of thumb — Don’t Say What You Shouldn’t Say, Don’t Ask What You Shouldn’t Ask, Don’t Do What You Shouldn’t Do.”

“5) All books and ink shall be collected. Thou shall not read or write unnecessarily, nor think unnecessarily.”

Sassy is an understatement when it comes to Yan Lianke, the master of satire and a very courageous author.

He grew up in an impoverished region, enlisted in the army where he became a propaganda writer, and then returned to civilian life to embark on a career as a novelist!

Because his books are highly political and very satirical, some of them were banned in China. He was even prohibited from obtaining a passport to travel abroad for three years.

You can borrow an array of his books from the library, but today we’ll recommend The Years, Months, Days: Two Novellas. The first story is about an elderly man who fights for his survival by tending to a single ear of corn after a terrible drought forces everyone to leave. The next is about a widow who goes to extremes to provide a normal life for her four disabled children (it involves soup made from the bones of her dead husband).

Sophia Amoruso

“You can’t act like you’ve arrived when you’re only just receiving the invitation.”

“You are not a special snowflake.”

Don’t mess with Sophia Amoruso, the author of #GIRLBOSS, which you can read here. In this book, she serves us some hard truths about the road to success, with a fierce attitude you can’t help but love.

#GIRLBOSS is essentially the story of Sophia’s life, and her path from being a dumpster-diving teenager to becoming the CEO of Nasty Gal, a $100+ million online fashion retailer. Sophia is far from typical, and her book is for people like her, who are seeking a unique path to success.

And there you have it, three sassy authors to keep you inspired! Happy reading! 😉
